For the past 20 years, the Pantone Color Institute has come to the rescue of the fashion-challenged to pick the most epic colors for the year.

Life’s too short to be black and white — here are the colors that are trending in 2020 and how you can put them to work in your wardrobe.

Trending Now: Spring/Summer NYFW Palettes

For 2020, Pantone chose Classic Blue as the Color of the Year, a nod to the Cerulean Blue that became the very first Color of the Year in 2000. The remaining 11 colors also pay tribute to easy tones that convey a sense of familiarity.

The full lineup of this year’s Pantone color palette includes:

This year’s theme centers around creativity and spontaneity, offering vibrant updates to familiar hues that are optimistic, inspiring, and energizing.

In addition, Pantone also released four classic colors that complement the 12 seasonal core shades. They are:

LARK
relaxed, low-key versatile khaki

NAVY BLAZER
be calm and confident deep navy blue

BRILLIANT WHITE
simple is pristine and powerful

ASH

Typically, pairing a seasonal color with a classic hue offers a striking contrast, provided they’re not in the same color family (e.g. lark and sunlight wouldn’t be a good match because they both contain dominant yellow hues).

How to Coordinate Colors Year-Round

Whether you’re stocking up on this year’s Pantone colors[1] or still trying to get the most from last year’s wardrobe, the color wheel becomes your best friend when coordinating fashion colors.

The color wheel is made up of primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) and secondary colors (green, purple, and orange). Secondary colors are formed by mixing primary colors. When primary and secondary colors are mixed, they create tertiary colors. The result is a wheel of colors that make it easy to see what coordinates well with another.

Color Wheel

Color Wheel for Easy Fashion Color Matching

To find complementary colors, select a color on the wheel and look at the color directly opposite. In the example color wheel, the blue family is directly across from the orange family.

Alternatively, you can look for analogous colors — shades that are next to each other on the color wheel. For example, orange fades into yellow, forming an orange/yellow tertiary color which could pair perfectly with a blue hue on the opposite side of the color wheel.

If you’re looking to incorporate some of this year’s Pantone colors, consider using shading and tinting to inform your choices. This simply means finding coordinating colors on the color wheel and making one or both lighter or darker.
